Today's Severe Weather Outlook

A pair of storm systems will bring strong to severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening.

The first system is found across the northern Plains into the Upper Midwest where an area of low pressure will move along a nearly stationary front. This front will separate a very warm and humid air mass from a cooler and drier air mass. With plenty of daytime heat and a few pieces of energy aloft, the atmosphere will be primed for scattered strong and severe storms later today.

The government’s Storm Prediction Center has issued a Slight Risk, or a 2 out of 5 on the severe weather probability scale, for portions of Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Cities such as Valentine, Neb., Rapid City and Sioux Falls, S.D., and Minneapolis are at risk today for strong wind gusts, large hail, and even an isolated tornado.

A second area of concern will cover portions of the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and eastern Ohio Valley. Here, a cold front will be sinking southeastward throughout the day and will help to spark scattered thunderstorms. A small Slight Risk has been issued across central Pennsylvania into New York, including State College and Scranton, Penn., and Binghamton and Albany, N.Y. Heavy rain and locally gusty winds will be possible from thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. Pittsburgh, Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York may also experience a strong thunderstorm later this afternoon or evening.

Make sure to know the difference between a watch and a warning should they become issued. A “watch” means that conditions are favorable for severe weather to occur and to be on alert for any rapidly changing conditions. A “warning” means that severe weather is imminent, and you should act fast to remain safe.

The best way to remain safe is to stay prepared and informed about your local weather. Have a severe weather kit packed with a battery-operated radio, water, and non-perishable food items should you be without power for long periods of time. Also, check the WeatherBug app frequently for any updates on today's severe weather. Remember, "When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!"
